Turner's Top 10 Leads Trojans at Whistling Straits
KOHLER, Wis. – Freshman Trey Turner fired the third best round of the day to notch his third consecutive top ten finish and lead the Taylor men's golf team at the Kohler Classic.
Turner hit 12 greens in regulation and rolled in two birdies en route to a final round 74 (+2) to finish in a tie for eighth place in the 90-player field with a two-day total of 153. The Trojans were one of only two teams in the 18-team field to improve on their first round score during the second round that featured colder temperatures and stronger winds blowing in off Lake Michigan. Taylor shaved three strokes off its first round score to card a team score of 319 as freshman Mitch Lamping carded an 80, senior Nate Scheibe added an 82, and freshman Nick Waskom finished with an 83. Junior Stefan Fahlen added an 84 as TU's drop score in the second round.
"We certainly played a little better today in much tougher conditions," Taylor coach Cameron Andry said. "We played our last two holes a collective 11-over par today so that was disappointing but we were still able to move up the leaderboard a few spots."
The Trojans finished in a tie for 11th in the 18-team field, climbing three spots for 14th entering the day. Fifth-ranked Grand View overtook No. 7 Texas Wesleyan to claim the tournament crown with a two-day total of 603 (299-304) while Texas Wesleyan finished at 609 (295-314).
Grand View's Tyler Christians claimed individual medalist honors with a two-day total of 3-over 145 (75-72).
The Kohler Classic marked the conclusion of the fall season for the Trojans who will now head into the winter offseason break before picking back up in March.
