Johnson Collects Top-10 in South Carolina
BEAUFORT, S.C. – In one of the top fields in the NAIA this season Taylor's Javan Johnson earned a tie for seventh place at the Oldfield Classic on Tuesday.
Johnson played steady golf in cool, windy conditions during Tuesday's final round at the 7,031-yard, par-72 layout of Oldfield Golf Club as the redshirt sophomore carded 13 pars, two birdies, two bogeys, and one double bogey en route to a final round 2-over par 74.
With scores of 74-71-74 Johnson finished the event at 3-over par (219) to earn his fourth top-10 finish through six events this season. Johnson played the par-4's in +4 for the week, posting the sixth best par-4 scoring average for the event. The Franklin, Indiana native notched a total of ten birdies and one eagle during the 54-hole event.
Johnson's play anchored No. 24 Taylor to a seventh place finish in the 12-team field that featured many of the top NAIA teams. The Trojans finished behind several NAIA Top-25 teams including No. 1 Point, No. 4 Coastal Georgia, No. 5 South Carolina Beaufort, No. 6 Dalton State, and No. 21 Reinhardt.
TU stumbled during Tuesday's final round with a team tally of 315 to finish the three-round event with a team score of 930 (315-300-315).
Along with Johnson's 74 sophomore Drew Pickering added a 78 as the only other Trojan to post a score in the 70's. Taylor also counted an 81 from sophomore Noah Ross and an 82 from sophomore Erik Fahlen while freshman Adam Kasitz notched an 84.
Top-ranked Point University logged a come-from-behind victory in team standings while South Carolina Beaufort's Dawson Peters posted a 6-under par total of 210 (71-69-70) to earn the individual title.
The 24th-ranked Trojans will return to action on March 29-30 for the Garn Championship at Keane Trace Golf Club in Lexington, Kentucky.
