INDIANAPOLIS – The Taylor baseball team swept the final Crossroads League Player-of-the-Week honors of the 2016 season, with Sam Wiese claiming player-of-the-week recognition and Luke Hunter taking the pitcher-of-the-week nod.
Wiese batted .556 with two runs, a triple and five runs batted in over Taylor's final three games of the Crossroads League Tournament. Wiese went 4-5 with a triple, two runs and three RBI to power the top-seeded Trojans past Bethel and into the tournament championship game.
Hunter dominated Huntington over eight innings in a 3-1 Taylor win in the Crossroads League Tournament on Monday. Hunter allowed one run on six hits and fanned nine Foresters to improve to 8-0 with a 1.43 earned-run average against CL bats this season.
The weekly Crossroads League honor is the first for Wiese this season and the third for Hunter. TU has now claimed seven weekly awards from the league office this season for baseball and boasts 49 Crossroads League and Mid-States Football Association Player-of-the-Week awards during the 2015-2016 year.
Wiese, Hunter and Taylor (40-16) will look to continue their strong play this week in Savannah, Georgia, when they compete in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round from May 17 through May 20.
