Platt, Sutter Secure Career-Firsts as CL Athletes of the Week
JACKSON, Mich. – The Crossroads League announced its Athletes of the Week from May 5-11 on Monday, and No. 9 Taylor baseball swept the honors after defeating Indiana Wesleyan in the CLT Championship on May 5.
David Platt was named the CL Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career after tossing three scoreless innings in the Trojans' Championship-clinching win, and Luke Sutter added his first CL Player of the Week nod with a four-RBI day in the championship doubleheader.
Platt took over on the mound Monday night in the third inning with TU trailing, 4-0. Three innings, four strikeouts and just two Wildcat baserunners later, Platt capped his outing with the game all tied at 4-4 through five innings.
Taylor needed Platt to be nearly perfect and provide the worn-down Purple and Grey pitching staff with some length, something the Quakertown, Pennsylvania, native executed beautifully in the one-run victory.
At the plate, Sutter led all players in the Championship slate with four runs batted in. The sophomore notched the game-winning, two-run double in the opener to force the if-necessary Championship contest.
In that second game, Sutter got TU on the board with a two-run homer, and his role in the bottom of the ninth inning proved pivotal in Taylor's walk-off 5-4 victory. The outfielder hit a single, stole a base and scored the game-ending run that gave the Trojans a sweep of the Crossroads League Titles for a second consecutive season.
On the season, Taylor baseball notched a combined 13 CL Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, helping Taylor athletics to 59 league athlete-of-the-week awards in 2024-2025.
No. 9 Taylor (46-9) turns its attention to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, beginning Monday at 4 p.m. at Winterholter Field versus RV Grand View (34-11).
