Combs' Big Day Pushes Trojans’ Win Streak to Ten
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Pete Combs carried the RV Taylor offense, while a terrific defensive display led to a 75-61 victory over RV Huntington on the road Saturday afternoon.
The junior forward scored a game-high 25 points shooting 10-13 from the field including a pair of triples. Combs added five rebounds, two assists, and a steal in a standout performance. The Bloomfield, Indiana native, continues to lead the Crossroads League in field goal percentage at 69 percent, which also tops the NAIA for players with 150 or more attempts.
TU's winning streak extended to ten, matching the ten game streak to begin the 2017-18 season and six-straight league wins, which is one shy of the seven they had in the 2012-13 season.
Combs scored the final seven points of an early 12-0 run to grab a ten-point lead after Huntington (12-5, 3-4 CL) scored the opening bucket.
The Trojans' lead was cut to one at 16-15 after a basket by Jackson Paul, who scored ten for Huntington. Anor Wogar pushed it to seven shortly after with a shot from beyond the arc before Huntington got within one at 28-27.
Taylor slowly built the lad back out to nine before the break, with the bench outscoring Huntington's 14-0 led by six a pieced from Wogar and TJ Davidson. The bench finished the game with a decisive 26-11 points advantage.
The Foresters stayed within striking distance to begin the second half trimming the Trojans' advantage to six five minutes into play after the break.
Izaiah Day splashed home a jumper off a feed from Carson Gould to ignite a 13-0 run to take a commanding 66-47 lead. Wogar added five points in the run and scored 11 points in the contest, the only other Trojan to reach double digits.
The Purple and Gray coasted to the finish and wound up with a key 75-61 road victory, which keeps them in second in the Crossroads League, one game behind leaders No. 1 Grace (17-0, 7-0 CL).
TU held a formidable Huntington offense to just 61 points, 15 points under their season average. Taylor forced 16 turnovers leading to a 14-7 advantage in points from turnovers.
RV Taylor (14-3, 6-1 CL) continues play on the road with a matchup against Spring Arbor (9-8, 2-5 CL) on Wednesday, January 14th, tipping at 7:30 pm.
