Trojans Climb Leaderboard at Pilot Invitational
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman Mitch Lamping carded a round of 1-over par 73 to lead the Taylor men's golf team's charge up the leaderboard on the final day of the Pilot Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club on Saturday.
The Trojans, who entered the day in eighth place, also got a pair of 76's (+4) from freshman Nick Waskom and junior Stefan Fahlen while senior Nate Scheibe finished at 77 (+5) as the Trojans fired a team score of 302.
TU's round of 302 (+14) was the second best round of the day and vaulted the Trojans to a four places in the team standings to a finish in fourth place. Holy Cross (Ind.) won the tournament with a two-day total of 599 (303-296) while the hosts from Bethel finished second at 608 (300-308) and Purdue-Calumet claimed third at 609 (299-310) while TU rounded out the top four at 616 (314-302).
Lamping's two-day total of 151 (78-73) was good enough for a seventh place finish while Stefan Fahlen (78-76) and Tucker Fahlen (79-75), who competed as an individual, finished in a tie for 11th place at 154. Sophomore Jordan Hall, who also competed as an individual, bounced back from an 82 on Friday with a solid round of 75 (+3) during Saturday's final round.
Bethel's Zach Hochstedler claimed individual medalist honors with a two-day total of even-par 144 (71-73). The Trojans placed a total of five players in the top 20 as Waskom (79-76) and Scheibe (79-77) finished in ties for 16th and 18th place, respectively, in the 55-player field.
Taylor has two more tournaments remaining on the regular season docket as the Trojans travel to Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru, Ind., for the Huntington Invitational next Friday and Saturday before wrapping up the regular season on Monday, April 27 with a one-day event hosted by Indiana Wesleyan at Meshingomesia Country Club.
