Trojans Finish Third at IWU Invitational
MARION, Ind. – The Taylor men's golf team claimed third place in the 14-team field at the Indiana Wesleyan Fall Invitational at Meshingomesia Country Club on Monday.
Sophomore Trey Turner followed an opening round 79 with a final round 73 during the 36-hole day to lead the Trojans and finish in a tie for 9th place in the 69-player field. Freshman Alec Dutkowski collected his second top-20 finish in as many events, finishing in a tie for 17th with rounds of 79 and 77 on the par-72 layout.
The Trojans carded a team score of 311 during the morning round with sophomore Mitch Lamping leading the way with a 4-over par round of 76. Freshman Chase Picken added a 77 in the morning while Dutkowski and Turner rounded out the scoring with a pair of 79s.
In the afternoon, Taylor fired a team score of 305, the second lowest score in the field during the second round. Senior Stefan Fahlen bounced back from a first round 81 with a 75 in the afternoon to spark TU's improvement. Taylor began the second round in third place, nine shots behind the host from Indiana Wesleyan. The Trojans gained ground on IWU in the afternoon, but still finished three strokes behind the Wildcats to claim third place.
Marian won the team title with a two-round total of 585 (295-290). Indiana Wesleyan (302-308), Taylor (311-305), Mount Vernon Nazarene (317-319), Spring Arbor (314-325) rounded out the top five in the event.
Freshman Jeremy Ray and Junior Jordan Hall played well for the Taylor B team. Ray shot 74-80 while Hall carded back-to-back rounds of 77 as each finished with a 2-round total of 154 and in a tie for 13th place. Sophomore Josh Stimmel made his collegiate debut on Monday, carding rounds of 83-82 and Junior Nathan Edwards carded rounds of 87-79 to round out the scoring for the Trojans.
Taylor will be back in action on September 28-29 when the Trojans host the Arnie's Intercollegiate Invitational at Egypt Valley Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
