Trojans Blitz Field in Wildcat Cup Victory
INDIANAPOLIS – The 15th-ranked Taylor men's golf team blitzed the field on Tuesday en route to a dominant victory at the Wildcat Cup at Brickyard Crossing Golf Club.
The Trojans tallied a team score of 2-under par 286 in the final round of the prestigious event to overcome a 7-shot deficit and collect TU's sixth tournament title of the 2016-17 season.
Sophomore Alec Dutkowski and junior Nick Waskom led the charge for Taylor on Tuesday. Dutkowski carded eight birdies en route to a final round 67 (-5) while Waskom tallied a new career-low round with a bogey-free 68 (-4). Dutkowski and Waskom tied with a two-day total of 145 (+1) to finish in a tie for second place in the field of 72 players.
Junior Trey Turner added a round of 75 to finish with a two-day total of 152 (77-75) and finish in a tie for 14th. Fellow junior Mitch Lamping collected his third consecutive top-5 finish with a tie for fifth place at 147 (71-76) while senior Ian Rinken added a final round 81.
Taylor's final round score of 286 was 17 shots better than the next best team score on a challenging day at Brickyard Crossing and propelled TU to a 12-shot victory with two-round total of 589.
The Trojans defeated an impressive list of teams, including seven teams ranked or receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll. No. 22 Grand View (601) finished second followed by #RV Bellevue (607), No. 19 Lindsey Wilson (609), and #RV Marian (610). No. 23 Madonna finished seventh while No. 7 Northwestern Ohio (624) finished 11th.
Taylor will face a field of NCAA Division I teams this weekend in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational hosted by Ball State at Delaware Country Club on Friday and Saturday.
