Spiegel, Trojan Defense Play Tough in One-Goal Loss

UPLAND, Ind. – A slow start for the Taylor men's soccer team (3-7-1, 0-2-1 CL) could not be overcome as the Trojans fell to Marian (7-2-1, 2-1-0) 2-1 Saturday evening on Senior Day.
Evan Dawdy of the Knights was active all night long in firing six shots, and he used his speed to help generate an early goal.
TU's offense struggled to find its footing to start the game, as it took just one shot through 33 minutes of game time. The struggles proved to be costly as Marian netted its second goal of the night with a header off a corner kick.
A throw-in from Collin Maris deep in the Knights' end gave the Trojans some life with under a minute to play, as Brock Carpenter collected the deflected throw-in, turned and scored to bring TU within a goal prior to the break.
Taylor showed more life coming out of the halftime intermission, and it appeared Brian Matipa netted the equalizer in the 59th minute, but a violation was called against the Trojans and the score was waved off.
The TU backline was all hands on deck in the second half of the match, as Sam Spiegel made multiple great efforts to keep Marian from tacking on a third goal. Taylor's defenders also combined to make a sliding save behind Spiegel early in the period to deny the Knights another score.
Matipa and the Trojans made one final push in the 89th minute, but a shot from Liam Brennan was saved as the Knights walked away with the narrow victory
Spiegel, who entered the contest second in the Crossroads League with 38 saves, added four saves on the night.
Carpenter led the Trojans with his four shots (two on goal) and one goal in the match. The score brought his season total to a team-best three goals.
Seniors Matipa, Matt Harrold and Webby Phiri were honored in a pre-game, Senior Day ceremony for their contributions to the men's soccer program. Those three have combined to appear in 119 games since the 2020 season for TU.
Taylor continues its two-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 7, when it hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene (5-7-0, 0-3-0 CL) at 1 p.m.
