Trojans Come Up Short in Road Opener
ANGOLA, Ind. – Taylor University's men's tennis team (1-1) suffered a narrow defeat at Trine by a final score of 4-3 Friday at the Ryan Tennis Center.
All three of Taylor's wins during singles action were recorded in comeback fashion after dropping the first set.
Tyler Lane earned his second win in as many outings at the top singles spot for the Trojans, edging out Trine's Drew Hackney 10-6 in a super tiebreaker set. After falling 4-6 in the opener, Lane found his rhythm and responded well to claim the second set in strong fashion, 6-0.
Garrett Spencer pulled out an impressive win at the No. 4 singles spot, taking the second set 6-3 after falling by the slimmest of margins 11-9 in the opening set tiebreaker. Spencer then flipped the trend and won the super tiebreaker set, this time clinching the match with the 11-9 advantage. It was his first singles win of the season.
It was more of the same at No. 5 singles, as Josh Dawson bounced back from a 4-6 setback and took the second set 6-4 to level his matchup with Trine's Leyton Byler at one set apiece. Dawson outlasted his opponent in the super tiebreaker set by an 11-9 margin, earning his second win of the fall campaign.
Joey Harper and Andrew Roth were unable to extend their matches as each fell in a close second set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively. Graham Beukelman fell in a competitive matchup at No. 2 singles by a 6-4 final in each set.
Trine (5-0) swept the decisive doubles point with Lane and Beukelman coming up just short in a tiebreaker, 7-4, at the top doubles spot.
TU will return to action Tuesday when Manchester visits the Taylor Tennis Complex in a 4 p.m. matchup.
