JACKSON, Mich. – Following her stellar performance in Taylor's home opener, Kaycie Warfel swept the Crossroads League Women's Basketball Offensive & Defensive Player of the Week awards, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Warfel rocked Odle Arena with a 37-point outing in her home debut, leading Taylor to a 2-0 start with an 80-72 victory over IU South Bend. Warfel's 37 points tied the fifth-highest single-game scoring total in Taylor women's basketball history. The freshman guard sparked a Trojan rally with 23 points after halftime and finished 13 of 24 (54.2%) from the floor and 9 for 12 (75%) at the charity stripe. She nearly posted a double-double while stuffing the stat sheet with nine boards, five assists, four steals and two blocks.
Although the exhibition stats don't count toward season totals, Warfel also posted a pair of 20-point outings earlier in the week in back-to-back nights against Division I opponents Cincinnati and Butler. She put up 22 points, including 13 in the first quarter against the Bearcats inside Fifth Third Arena, while following up with 21 points versus the Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
It's been a strong start for Warfel's college career, with the freshman currently tied for fifth in points per game (31.0) among the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) scoring leaders. Warfel opened the season with 25 points in TU's 19-point win at Holy Cross.
Warfel is the second Trojan to earn a weekly honor from the league office this season after Celina Blount garnered CL Defensive Player of the Week last week.
TU will return to action on Wednesday evening, when it welcomes RV Olivet Nazarene to Upland. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. inside Odle Arena.
