Taylor Cruises Past Trinity Christian 92-50 to Stay Unbeaten
PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Taylor University women's basketball team extended its undefeated start to the season with a commanding 92-50 victory over Trinity Christian on Saturday, improving to 5-0 behind a balanced offensive attack. It's the first undefeated start through five games for TU women's basketball since the 2019-20 season.
Four Trojans reached double figures as Taylor dominated from start to finish, building leads as large as 45 points in the fourth quarter. The 42-point margin of victory stands as the second-largest under head coach Cassie Wiseman.
Kaycie Warfel led all scorers with 22 points, including a blistering first quarter where she knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Celina Blount added 14 points along with Quinn Kelly (11) and Marissa Trout (10) in double digits. Kelly grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as the Trojans dominated the glass with a 59-25 advantage. Whitney Warfel dished a team-best four assists while Kaycie Warfel recorded four steals.
Taylor established control early, taking a 17-10 lead on a Madi Allen layup with 3:32 remaining in the opening quarter. Back-to-back buckets from Emma Ancelet and Kaycie Warfel in the final minute pushed the advantage to 23-13 after one period. The Trojans shot 50 percent in the first quarter and converted seven points off four steals.
The momentum carried into the second quarter as Ancelet opened the scoring with a layup. Taylor then embarked on a 15-3 run spanning from the three-minute mark of the first quarter, extending the lead to 30-13 on a Trout 3-pointer at the 8:15 mark that forced a Trinity timeout.
Blount pushed the advantage to 20 points with back-to-back baskets, making it 38-17 with under two minutes until halftime. The Trojans took a 43-22 lead into the break after outscoring the Trolls 20-9 in the second period.
Taylor continued to pull away in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 37 points before cruising through the final period.
The Trojans finished with 13 steals and forced 20 turnovers, which led to a 27-10 advantage in points off turnovers. Taylor dominated the interior with 33 second-chance points and 56 total points scored from inside the paint.
Overall, TU shot at a 49 percent clip from the field and limited the Trolls to 35-percent shooting. The Trojans limited the hosts to just 10.5 percent (2 of 19) from three-point range.
Taylor will open Crossroads League play Wednesday night at Grace. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Winona Lake.
