UPLAND, Ind. – Senior Kelsey Chow and junior Rachel Kammer of Taylor women's tennis each have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District II At-Large Team, as voted on and recently announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The award is designed to recognize student-athletes for outstanding achievements in the classroom, as well as on the field of play. In order to be eligible for the honor, an athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have reached sophomore status academically with one full year at the current institution of enrollment and must have participated in over half of the team's competitions during the current season.
Chow and Kammer were two of three women's tennis players selected for the honor in District II. The two Trojans, along with Marian women's golfer Tara Lecher, represent the three student-athletes from the Crossroads League to earn the distinction in the at-large category.
Chow has excelled in the classroom with a 3.93 GPA while studying biology at TU. On the court, Chow played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for Taylor in the fall season as the Trojans finished fourth in the Crossroads League before bowing out in the semifinal match of the league tournament to No. 21 Marian. The senior from Wheaton, Illinois has been a part of the Taylor lineup throughout her four-year career in both singles and doubles. Perhaps Chow's biggest senior season highlight came when she earned the team's decisive point in Taylor's 5-4 win over Grace in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals.
Kammer maintains a 3.85 GPA while studying elementary education, and on the court she played primarily at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles in her junior season to make a noteworthy move up the Taylor lineup. Against quality competition, the Omaha, Nebraska native played well and went 9-14 overall in singles and 10-16 overall in doubles with freshman partner Betsy Jones.
Taylor has now had 21 student-athletes receive Academic All-District honors during the 2014-2015 year. Chow and Kammer will next be placed on the national ballot for the Capital One Academic All-America Team, which will be announced on June 8.
