MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Taylor University men's soccer team fell 2-0 at Mount Vernon Nazarene in Saturday's Crossroads League action.
The physical contest featured 29 fouls and eight cards, including two red cards that left both teams playing shorthanded in the final stages. Miguel Bello opened the scoring for the Cougars in the 12th minute, and Kevin Ngula added an insurance goal early in the second half.
TU goalkeeper Connor Shaw kept the Trojans within striking distance, making three first-half saves and closing out the contest with seven total defensive stops.
The Trojans had their best first-half chance in the 11th minute when Caleb Van Dop forced a save from Pierson, but MVNU responded moments later with the opening goal.
TU came out with renewed energy after halftime, with Carlos Sanabria testing Pierson in the 50th minute. The Trojans pressed forward in search of a goal, dominating the second-half shot count 16-9 and earned five corner kicks after the break.
Giulio Mapessa was active in the attacking third, registering four shots, while Van Dop added four attempts of his own. Sanabria led Taylor's offensive efforts with four shots, three of which came on target and required saves from Pierson.
TU (7-6-2, 1-4-2 CL) will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 25, when it welcomes Huntington for a 7 p.m. match inside Turner Stadium.
