Luttrell Nets Hat Trick as RV Taylor Routs Cornerstone, 9-1
UPLAND, Ind. — Eliza Luttrell recorded a hat trick and six other Trojans scored to lead RV Taylor to a season-high nine goals in Friday night's 9-1 rout of Cornerstone at Turner Stadium.
TU (7-0-0) extended its unbeaten streak to seven following the win, while logging eight or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time since at least 2001.
With the victory, the Trojans improved to 32-3-3 (.882) in home non-conference matches since 2016.
Luttrell logged her third career multi-goal effort, which includes the previous two contests where she has combined to score five of the team's 17 goals.
TU has outscored its opponents by a combined margin of 33-2 this season after surrendering just the first goal allowed in a home match. The Trojans had entered the contest tied for the nation's lead in shutouts with five.
On Friday, the scoring started early as TU struck with the first goal just 31 seconds into the match. Maegen Hill, who made her third consecutive start, scored off a counterattack ignited by Leah McQuade, who served up the assist.
The Trojans used the early momentum and moved ahead for good with a 3-0 lead by the 26-minute mark, riding the three-goal advantage into the halftime break. TU overwhelmed Cornerstone (1-4-0) through the opening period with a 16-5 advantage in total shot attempts, including 10 shots on frame.
Morgan Fletemeyer made it 2-0 on a free kick from 25 yards in the 14th-minute, curling the shot into the upper 90 and out of the goalkeeper's reach. Luttrell's first goal made it 3-0 in the 26th minute as she broke free down the left flank and beat the keeper from close range.
TU goalkeeper Brianna Rawlings made a brilliant save on a Cornerstone shot attempt that came off a set play with nearly three minutes remaining in the opening stanza. The stop preserved the first-half shutout and kept a comfortable lead in place throughout the night.
In the second half, TU built up the momentum again after responding to CU's goal in the 57th minute, outpacing the visitors with six unanswered goals over the final 30-plus minutes of regulation.
Luttrell's second goal made it 4-1 in the 61st minute, before Millie Jones netted her first collegiate goal just three minutes later to extend the lead to four.
Shortly after, Sydney Reddy found her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute to make it 6-1, and she followed that up with an assist on the next goal, which was scored by Lydia Johnson in the 77th minute. It was Johnson's fifth goal of her freshman campaign.
Luttrell kept applying pressure and carved her way to a third goal in the 80th minute to push the lead out to 8-1. She's the first Trojan to register a hat trick this season, and the first since a pair of teammates did it last season in the same game. One of those was Faith Sena, who came on to score the final goal in Friday night's victory with a highlight-reel play, as she volleyed a left-footed strike from 20 yards off a low cross sent by Lydia Bailey. It was also Sena's first goal this season.
Goalkeeper Ava Callaway came on to close the match midway through the second half, making her second consecutive appearance between the posts.
TU is off to a perfect 7-0 start for the third time in five seasons and will return to action Wednesday at No. 7 Aquinas.
