Taylor’s Win Streak Snapped in Battle of Ranked Teams
UPLAND, Ind. – In a game that lived up to its billing, No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan squeezed past No. 24 Taylor 1-0 at Turner Stadium Saturday night.
TU (9-1-0, 1-1-0 CL) had its record-tying win streak snapped at nine, which was only accomplished once before in program history during the 2016 season.
The Trojans were unable to find the equalizer despite five shots on goal and finishing with the slight edge in total shots, 15-13.
IWU's Avery Williams scored the game-winner shortly after halftime, a header flicked to the back of the net in the 50th minute. The freshman leads the Wildcats with six goals. IWU (7-1-1, 1-0-1 CL) produced six shots on goal while each team notched four corners.
Overall, the high-energy Crossroads League tilt featured everything you'd expect from a rivalry matchup. A packed house at Turner Stadium featured passionate supporters from both sides, and big momentum shifts for each squad throughout the night.
Goalkeeper Brianna Rawlings kept the Trojans within striking distance all night, holding steady between the posts with her second-highest saves total on the year with five stops.
One of TU's best scoring opportunities came just before the close of the first half, when Faith Sena served up a corner to Campbell Massey, who made a clean connection on a header try but the ball bounced just outside the right post.
Two more decent scoring chances posted from Eliza Luttrell and Kiana Siefert shortly after the IWU goal kept the Wildcats on their heels, as the Trojans kept prodding the penalty area in their attempt to level the score.
In the 53rd minute, Luttrell stuck her foot in the ground and dribbled past her defender deep into the right side of the box and fired a right-footed missile shot attempt toward the top shelf but IWU's Avery Sluss snagged the attempt with both outstretched hands.
Luttrell had another look on target open in the 75th minute, as she cleaned up a free ball and attempted to find a solid touch from near range but she was not able to get enough pace on the shot attempt which was scooped up by Sluss.
As TU kept pressing with the clock winding down, Meskerem James and Millie Jones provided a pair of solid looks on frame on back-to-back runs. However, the Trojans were unsuccessful down the stretch, and the final threat came within the final few minutes of action when Luttrell took the final corner of the evening.
The contest was the first meeting between ranked teams at Turner Stadium since 2017, when the Trojans hosted a pair of ranked-vs.-ranked matchups against Marian and Columbia.
TU returns to action with a pair of road matches next week at Goshen (Weds.) and No. 13 Spring Arbor (Sat.). The Trojans are back at Turner Stadium for a 1 p.m. tilt on Saturday, Oct. 11 against No. 4 Marian.
