No. 19 Taylor and No. 3 Marian Play to Scoreless Draw in Defensive Battle
UPLAND, Ind. – In a defensive standoff befitting two nationally ranked sides, No. 19 Taylor and No. 3 Marian played to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon at Turner Stadium, with the Trojans clamping down defensively to secure a crucial Crossroads League point.
The result improved Taylor to 10-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play while handing Marian (12-0-1, 4-0-1 CL) its first shutout in 23 games, dating back to a 1-0 loss against TU at the same venue last season.
Marian, which controlled possession and gained majority of its chances in the second half, outshot Taylor 17-5 and put five shots on goal to the Trojans' two. But goalkeeper Brianna Rawlings turned away all five attempts, making three saves in the first half to keep the Knights off the board.
The opening 45 minutes featured a cautious buildup as both teams surveyed the pitch.
MU's Taylor Wert fired the first attempt in the ninth minute, which was turned aside by Rawlings, setting the tone for the afternoon. The Trojans generated their best first-half opportunity in the 24th minute when Sydney Reddy's spinning effort forced a save from MU goalkeeper Lily Ames.
Eliza Luttrell tested Ames again in the 33rd minute during a sequence that saw Morgan Fletemeyer deliver a set-piece cross into the box, producing a header from Faith Sena that bounced loose without finding the back of the net.
Marian applied heavy pressure late in the opening half, with Katie Koger leading the charge. The Knights' leading scorer fired five shots on the day, including two on target, but couldn't break through TU's organized defense.
The Knights' best chance came in the 50th minute when Allie Tredway found herself with an open look, but TU defenders Shalyn Hussey and Libby Thomas recovered to protect the vacant net. Thomas also came up with a critical header save a few minutes later while protecting the right post after a corner kick sequence. The Knights finished with eight total shots after the break.
Taylor's defensive resolve showed again in the 79th minute when Fletemeyer blocked a Marian free kick from the top of the box, with a perfectly timed reaction, deflecting the shot attempt out of the air with her foot.
The shutout was TU's seventh of the season, tied for the third-most in the NAIA. The Trojans have surrendered just one first-half goal through 13 matches and only five goals total, building a defensive identity that has kept them competitive against a challenging schedule.
The draw gives the Trojans a 2-2-1 record against ranked opponents this season, including victories over No. 18 Campbellsville and No. 11 Aquinas.
TU returns to action with its final pair of regular season home matches this week. The Trojans host Saint Francis on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., before welcoming Mount Vernon Nazarene for Senior Night on Saturday.
