Trojans Enjoy Success as Neville Era Begins
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Taylor men's track and field enjoyed a successful day in its indoor season opener at the Capital Invitational on Friday.
The invitational marked the first day of competition for first-year TU head coach David Neville.
Freshman Nolan Sponseller turned in an impressive performance in his debut for the Trojans, winning the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.90. The Trojans took the top two spots in the 60 meter hurdles as Brandan Wilchcombe and Gage Minniear posted times of 8.55 and 8.73, respectively.
The Trojans' 4x400 relay team of Leslie Romer, Minniear, Sponseller, and Wilchcombe posted a time of 3:32.54 to finish second. The quartet also teamed up to take spots two through five in the 400 meter dash with Wilchcombe leading the pack at 53.27 followed by Romer, Sponseller, and Minniear.
Romer added a second place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.09.
TU's Kenny Higgins turned in a solid performance with a victory in the weight throw (16.13 meters) and a second place finish in the shot put (13.26 meters).
Taylor's distance runners did not compete in the opening event.
The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Indianapolis Invitational.
