No. 24 Taylor Blanks Bethel 1-0 in Crossroads League Opener
MISHAWAKA, Ind. – A free kick off the foot of Campbell Massey found the back of the net in the 65th minute, lifting No. 24 Taylor past Bethel 1-0 in Wednesday's Crossroads League opener for both squads.
With the victory, TU tied its best start while improving to 9-0-0 (1-0-0 CL) on the season. The Trojans, who won their third straight league opener, will attempt to capture a 10th straight win for the first time in program history when cross-county rival Indiana Wesleyan visits Turner Stadium on Saturday evening.
TU outpaced Bethel (6-2-1, 0-1-0 CL) 11-4 in shots on goal, while not surrendering a shot on frame to the Pilots until the second half. The Trojans also held a commanding 10-3 edge in corner tries.
Eliza Luttrell led the Trojans with a team-high three shots placed on target, while Kiana Siefert chipped in with a pair of shots on goal, both in the opening 45 minutes of action.
After a scoreless first half, both sides came out firing by exchanging a shot attempt on goal within the opening two minutes of play in the second period. For the Pilots, it was just their second shot attempt overall and first save registered on the night for TU goalkeeper Brianna Rawlings.
Rawlings secured her fourth shutout of the season and seventh of her career by recording three saves between the posts.
With TU continuing to generate pressure, the Trojans drew a foul against the Pilots and set up the scoring play in the 65th minute, which came off a set piece from long distance. Massey, lined up near midfield on the left flank, fired the ball deep into the box and it hung up, carrying well past the keeper and landing in the back of the net to stun the Bethel defenders.
Then, the action picked up after the scoring strike with both teams building opportunities.
Bethel quickly countered with a shot attempt, which was then followed by shots delivered by Luttrell, Lydia Johnson, Morgan Fletemeyer and Lydia Bailey all in a span of five-plus minutes.
The Trojans remained organized and held up defensively, closing out the victory as Rawlings pulled down her final save in the 81st minute.
TU returns to Crossroads League action on Saturday when No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan visits Turner Stadium for a 7 p.m. match. The Wildcats played to a scoreless draw against No. 13 Spring Arbor on Wednesday night.
