Taylor Battles No. 16 Marian in Season Finale
MUNCIE, Ind. – Taylor closed out its men's tennis season Saturday with a Crossroads League matchup against No. 16 Marian at First Serve Muncie, honoring senior Ian Helfert before the Knights claimed a 4-0 victory in a contest played indoors due to rain.
The Knights (13-9, 6-3 CL) controlled the doubles action as Jan Bartolome and Marc Soriano topped Graham Beukelman and Tyler Lane 6-1 at No. 1, and Juan Garcia-Tunon and Mateo Guerin defeated Ian Helfert and Matthew Williams by the same score at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
Marian carried the momentum into singles, where Soriano defeated Joseph Harper 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 and Bartolome defeated Josh Dawson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. Iyan Cresens closed out the clinch with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Josh Clegg at No. 6. Play was halted in the remaining three flights once the team result was decided, with the Knights holding leads in each. The marquee matchup at No. 1 singles featured No. 71 Ashworth against Taylor's No. 74 Lane, with Ashworth ahead 6-2, 4-1 when play stopped. Guerin led Beukelman 6-3, 3-0 at No. 3, and Garcia-Tunon was up 6-1, 5-3 on Helfert at No. 4 singles.
Taylor closed its first season of competition after relaunching the men's and women's tennis programs at 4-12 overall and 1-8 in Crossroads League play.
