FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Taylor sported an early lead in each game against RV Saint Francis (33-9, 29-5 CL) on Friday, but saw each of them fade in a sweep on the road as Crossroads League play nears its end.
Kaylee Larkin launched her 39th career home run, as she has cemented herself in second place in program history, three behind Lauren Ehle in first with 42. The senior slugger is in the top ten in program history in RBI, batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, total bases, and is the program record holder in career walks with 93.
Taylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener following back-to-back hits by Jayci Kitchen and Madisyn Standridge. Kitchen beat an attempt to throw her out at home on an infield grounder before Standridge crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.
Claire Cullen escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning after retiring the first two batters and induced a weak fly ball to end the frame stranded three Cougars on the bases.
The Cougars clawed three runs across the board in the second before Larkin blasted a three-run home run to retake the lead for the Trojans, and give hope for the road team of an upset.
The back-and-forth contest continued with the Cougars scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth to gain a 7-5 advantage, which would hold to the end as both offenses went scoreless in the final three innings.
The Trojans scored a run in the opening inning of game two as Standridge crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Larkin before Saint Francis scored the next six runs for a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Lizzy Sinders had an RBI single driving in Emily Guthrie, who had a pinch-hit walk, in the sixth, but USF scored four in the bottom of the inning to end the game in run-rule fashion 10-2.
Taylor (23-23, 18-16 CL) caps the regular season schedule with a home doubleheader against Goshen (17-31, 11-23 CL) on Saturday, April 25th, with first pitch at 1:00 pm. TU will honor seven seniors between game one and game two at Gudakunst Field for senior day.
