Jung Leads Trojans in Rout at Brookwood
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Senior All-American Nicole Jung blitzed the field to lead the Taylor women's golf team to a resounding victory in the season-opening tournament at the Battle at Brookwood.
Jung broke her own record for the lowest 36-hole total in program history, posting rounds of 70-69 for a total of 5-under par 139. The Santa Cruz, Bolivia native finished 11 shots clear of her closest challenger, teammate Maddie Thomas.
Jung's pair of under par rounds propelled the Trojans to a 30-shot victory over second place Grace College. Taylor posted team tallies of 294-297 on the par-72 layout of Brookwood Golf Club. TU's 36-hole total of 593 ties for the second best team total in program history.
Thomas tallied rounds of 72-78 to finish at 150 (+6) to earn the 20th top-5 finish of her career. Thomas's opening-round 72 featured a remarkable display of ball-striking that included 17 greens in regulation.
Senior Taylor French closed the tournament with a flurry of three consecutive birdies on her final three holes to move into a tie for third place. French carded a 77 in round one, followed by a 74 in round two for a total of 151 (+7).
Fellow senior Annie Stimmel also finished tied for third at 151 with rounds of 75 and 76.
Sophomore Emma Torres made her Taylor debut with back-to-back rounds of 83 to round out the scoring for the TU A-team.
The Trojans also got strong performances from several members of the reserve team. Sophomore Kailey Behrens led the way, carding a career-low round of 73 in round one, followed by an 81 in round two. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native finished in sixth place at 154 for the first top-10 of her career.
Senior Rachel Coers was close behind at 156 with a pair of 78's while freshman Kirsten Schrock played well in her collegiate debut with scores of 81-78. Sophomore Caitlyn Tasney made her Taylor debut with rounds of 79-87 while freshman Elizabeth Kemper added rounds of 89-85 in her collegiate debut.
The Trojans earned victories over fellow Crossroads League members in Grace (313+308=621), Mount Vernon Nazarene (337+333=670), and Huntington (335+344=679). The Taylor reserve squad posted team scores of 311-322 to finish in third place in the team standings.
The Trojans return to action this weekend at The Players Club Invitational at The Players Club at Woodland Trials in Yorktown, Indiana.
