Men's Tennis Earns Split
UPLAND, Ind. – The TU men's tennis team went 1-1 on Saturday as they fell to NAIA No. 21 Marian but bounced back in a non-league matchup to beat Wittenberg University 4-3. Taylor (4-2, 2-2) moves to an even 2-2 in league play with both losses coming to teams ranked in the NAIA national poll.
In the opener, TU fell 6-1 with their lone team point being won by Christen Jacquottet in the No. 3 singles slot. Jacquottet battled through a three-set match to defeat Marian's Diogo Jesus 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Also picking up a win was Salvador Lo Cascio and David Sandi in No. 2 doubles. However, because TU lost in the No. 1 and No. 3 slots, the 6-3 win on court two did not give TU a team point.
In the nightcap, the Trojans picked up the important doubles point thanks to wins on courts one and two. In No. 1 doubles, Andre Danelli and Jacquottet landed a closely contested 6-4 match while Lo Cascio and Sandi blanked their Wittenberg counterparts 6-0.
Needing three points to secure the match, the top of TU's lineup delivered. Playing No. 1 singles for the first time in his career, Chase Bremner landed a 6-4, 6-2 win. Jacquottet continued his solid outing with a 6-2, 6-3 victory while Lo Cascio recorded a resounding 6-0, 6-3 win.
"We had a good day. Overall, we played very competitive tennis," praised Coach Don Taylor. "MU is a strong team, and it was one of those matches that was closer than the score indicated. We would have liked to get two wins, but we are looking to improve when we play against a team like Marian. We are hoping we will be there by the end of the season. I was pleased with the way we played."
The Trojans will get back to work on Tuesday when they travel to Spring Arbor to face the Cougars at 3:00 p.m.
