GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Taylor's run of close games in the early season continued on Saturday, dropping a pair of one-run games to Georgetown on the road.
Taylor (5-7) dropped the opener in extra innings 3-2 in another pitchers' duel featuring freshman Lizzy Sinders. A day after throwing a complete game shutout Sinders delivered seven and two thirds of three run ball.
The Trojans offense was hot to begin the contest, scoring a pair in the first. Sinders tripled to lead things off, followed by a walk from Jayci Kitchen. Madisyn Standridge drove in Sinders on a groundout and Ava Everman singled home Kitchen one batter later to increase her Crossroads League leading RBI total, which sits at 13 after today's games.
The score stayed steady until the bottom of the third, when the Tigers mounted a two-out rally. A pair of singles sandwiched a double to plate a pair of runs and evened the score at two apiece.
Sinders settled in thereafter, retiring the next eight and 13 of the next fourteen batters she faced to keep Georgetown at two runs. The Taylor offense was also kept quiet, despite getting a baserunner in all but one inning. The elusive clutch hit evaded the Purple in Gray to send the game into extra innings.
After failing to plate a run in the top of the eighth, the Tigers plated a run on a squeeze play, which followed a pair of singles to get the victory.
Taylor began the nightcap with another promising first inning at the plate. A trio of singles by Sinders, Kitchen and Bella Browning loaded the bases. Everman cashed in with an RBI before Grace Mullins skied an RBI sacrifice fly. Kaylee Larkin doubled home Browning for the third run of the inning.
Georgetown (5-3) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to one, capitalizing on a pair of singles to begin the frame.
TU could not take advantage of a myriad of errors by the Tigers in the middle innings and eventually saw the lead taken away with three runs by the home team in the bottom of the fifth.
Sinders continued her terrific debut season with an RBI single in the top of the sixth and a walk by Kitchen loaded the bases with one out and a one-run deficit. A force out at home on the next play preceded a strikeout to end the threat and Taylor could not string a rally in the seventh in the defeat.
Taylor returns to Upland, Indiana for its home opener on Saturday, March 7th against Northwestern Ohio (6-5), with first pitch set for 1:00 pm at Gudakunst Field.
