Turner Claims Battle on Beale Street Title
MEMPHIS – Taylor's Trey Turner navigated windy conditions and treacherous hole locations en route to a final round 76 to claim his first collegiate victory at the Battle on Beale Street on Tuesday.
The sophomore from Bedford, Indiana entered the final round tied with teammate Alec Dutkowski for the individual lead after an opening round 73 (+1) and he played steady golf in difficult conditions on the TPC Southwind Course, home of the PGA Tour's Fedex St. Jude Classic. Turner made back-to-back birdies on the par-3 fourth hole and the par-5 fifth hole and added birdies on the par-3 14th and the par-5 17th to fight off a charge from the University of the Cumberlands Florian Loutre who finished one shot behind after a final round 75. The tournament victory marks the first for a TU golfer since April of 2015 when Nick Waskom claimed medalist honors at the Huntington Invitational.
Sixteenth ranked University of the Cumberalnds used a final round charge to edge No. 23 Taylor by two shots for the team title. UC fired a final round 307 for a two-round total of 618 (311-307) while the Trojans struggled to a final round score of 321 for a two-round total of 620 (299-321) to finish runner-up.
Along with Turner's score of 76 the Trojans also counted an 81 from freshman Alec Dutkowski and a pair of 82's from sophomore Mitch Lamping and junior Ian Rinken. Freshman Jeremy Ray added a final round 83 for the Trojans.
Dutkowski claimed his fifth top ten finish in six collegiate starts with a two-round total of 154 (73-81) while Lamping finished tied for 21st at 158 (76-82). Ray finished tie for 29th in the 60-player field with a total of 160 (77-83) and Rinken finished tied for 35th at 164 (82-82).
The Trojans will continue their spring campaign on Monday, March 21 when the Trojans head to Crooked Creek Golf Club in London, Kentucky for the Southeastern Kentucky Invitaitonal hosted by the University of the Cumberlands.
