Pacer and Trojans Claim Historic Senior Day Victory
UPLAND, Ind. – On a rain-soaked Senior Day at Wheeler Field, the Trojans made history with a 15-8 win over Siena Heights. The victory was TU's eighth of the season, breaking last year's single-season wins record, while Lucas Pacer stole the show with a pair of new single-game individual records after being honored.
In addition to breaking its single-season wins record for a second-straight season, Taylor locked itself into the upcoming WHAC Tournament for the second-straight season and the third time in program history and kept its hopes alive for hosting a postseason game for the first time ever.
Pacer etched his name atop the Taylor record books for the most ground balls and caused turnovers in a game in program history, dominating his end of the field all afternoon with 16 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. Pacer also became TU's all-time leader in games played and games started on Saturday and padded his lead as the program's career leader in ground balls and caused turnovers.
Pacer was not alone in his standout performance, as Grant Elzinga added seven ground balls, two caused turnovers and one goal scored, and the combo of Xander Bateman and Carter Taylor teamed for five caused turnovers. In all, the Taylor defense disrupted SHU (0-14, 0-10 WHAC) all afternoon to the tune of 23 caused turnovers, while Julian Spallinger racked up eight saves in 45 minutes of work.
On the offensive end of the field, Will Saxby and Jackson Dale had their way. Saxby finished with six goals, two assists, 10 points, five ground balls and three caused turnovers, with Dale adding one goal and 11 assists for the second-best single-game assist total in Taylor history. Henry Cooper also chipped in with three goals and one helper.
While Taylor never pulled away from Siena Heights in the contest, it was never really threatened after opening a 4-1 lead out of the gates. The Trojans then closed the half on a 7-0 burst and finished off the 15-8 win during an uneventful final 30 minutes.
RV Taylor (8-7, 4-6 WHAC) will play a pivotal game at Michigan-Dearborn (6-9, 3-7 WHAC) on Tuesday at 6:00 pm, with the winner of that match likely earning a first-round home match against the other in the WHAC Tournament one week later on April 28.
