Taylor Women's Tennis Celebrates Program Revival with 6-1 Victory
UPLAND, Ind. — Taylor University's women's tennis team celebrated the historic restart of its program with a 6-1 victory over Indiana University East on Monday at the Taylor Tennis Complex, ending a five-year hiatus.
After claiming the doubles point, the Trojans went on to dominate singles play, winning five of six individual matches to secure the milestone victory.
Maddy Fuqua registered the first singles result, defeating Gracie Helms 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to give Taylor an early 2-0 lead.
Sarah Scott provided crucial momentum with a dramatic three-set comeback victory at No. 2 singles, rallying from a 6-7 first-set loss to defeat Brooke Schafstall 6-1, 10-5 in the decisive super tiebreaker.
Top singles player Jillian Darby secured a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Chantelle Mapondera, winning the tiebreaker to avoid a third set.
Katherine Schaufelberger delivered the most dramatic performance of the day, overcoming a 4-6 first-set deficit to defeat Lexie Swauger 6-4, 12-10 at No. 5 singles in an extended super tiebreaker.
Anna Stone won by forfeit at No. 6 singles. Lauren Miller provided Indiana East's lone singles victory, defeating Evy Danemayer 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
In doubles play, the Trojans claimed the point by winning two of three matches.
Darby and Stone defeated Mapondera and Miller 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Schaufelberger and Evy Danemayer won by forfeit.
Taylor continues its fall season Friday with a road match at Trine.
